It’s that time of year – the mornings are frosty, there is a chill in the air and you’ve most probably found yourself wanting to snuggle up in your warmest, comfiest tracksuit and not wanting to leave your warm, cosy bed in the morning. Winter has arrived; and it can be made easier if you are equipped with the right threads to keep you warm and well insulated amidst the bitter chill. Although you might think that big jumpers are the way to go when braving the coldest season of the year, the secret to getting warm quickly and maintaining your body heat all day is wearing layers of thin clothes to keep you warm as they trap in your body heat.
Boody – Organic Bamboo Eco Wear is a Sydney based company that has created an eco-business that makes skin friendly, bamboo basics while treading as lightly as possible on the earth. Their mission is to create a growing range of superbly comfortable garments that are simple but stylish, extraordinarily soft but practical and made from materials that are in greater harmony with our planet. Boody has created the perfect range of tops, leggings, underwear, and socks for men, women and now babies to provide the whole family with eco-friendly layering that keep your insides warm while allowing your skin to breath at the same time.
The benefits of manufacturing clothing out of Bamboo are endless especially for eczema sufferers and those with sensitive skin. The fibres in bamboo do not irritate the skin and are much gentler than most man-made fibres. Bamboo contains an anti-bacterial and anti-fungal property which is retained after washing many times. This property also makes Boody garments odour-resistant. The structure of the bamboo fibres contain micro-gaps which make the fabric breathable, provide ventilation and pull moisture away from the body, allowing the skin to breathe. Bamboo clothing is light, luxuriously soft and gentle on the skin making it a dream to wear whatever the weather.
Bamboo is grown organically using no pesticides, no insecticides and no fertilisers. Producing commercial harvests of bamboo requires only rainwater. Unlike cotton (even organically grown cotton) which requires 20,000 litres of water to produce one kilogram. What’s more, all water used in the production process is recycled and re-used. Bamboo plantations produce more oxygen and absorb more carbon dioxide and greenhouse gases than regular tree plantations and improve air quality. Bamboo is the fastest growing woody plant in the world, some species of bamboo shoot up as much as one metre a day! New stems are able to be harvested again and again making it one of the most sustainable and practical sources of material available to us.
David Greenblo, the Co-Founder/Director of Boody Organic Bamboo Eco Wear answered a few of our questions below:
Where did the inspiration behind your company come from?
I have been in fashion for many years and my partner is a chemist. I was doing research and came across bamboo yarn and discovered its amazing properties and since he knew the health and wellness market, we decided to team up. The fabric is naturally thermoregulating: it is warm in winter and cool in summer and wicks moisture away from the body. Our fabric is eco aware and sustainably grown and also has many beneficial health attributes which justify why it is sold in retailers who are “purveyors of health”.
What makes your products different from other similar products currently on the market?
Our design is innovative but covers all the basic requirements. Our fabrics have been tested from the growing of the bamboo right through to the production and manufacturing process to ensure that we are as eco-friendly and environmentally conscious as possible. For example, even our packaging is made from recycled paper and printed using vegetable based inks. Our garments are also seam-free, fit perfectly, feel fabulous and we don’t believe that anyone in the world can compete with Boody.
What is your favourite Boody basic?
Every garment we sell deserves its place on our merchandise stand so they are all favourites but our basic bikini is the most popular style.
What is a must have Boody item for your wardrobe this winter?
Our ¾ sleeve top, a few pairs classic bikini briefs or full briefs, a few pairs of leggings and of course, some comfy bamboo socks.
What does Boody have in store for the future?
Late last year we launched Boody Baby, a bamboo fabric based range of essential babywear which is also in the Health Emporium and doing very well. Apart from continuing to grow the brand in the USA, Canada, the UK, South Africa, Denmark, New Zealand and a few other countries, we are working on a range of bamboo based sleepwear as well as some yoga pants and tops.
As well as eating well, drinking warm, moving your body, staying social and snuggling up to help ward off the cold over these next few months, go into The Health Emporium and get your hands on your very own Boody basics. Layer up and enjoy affordable luxury to help keep you snug in winter, providing you with warmth and a silky soft feeling on your skin. What you put on your body is just as important as what you put in it – Boody Organic Bamboo Eco Wear will fit seamlessly into your lifestyle and won’t cost the earth.
